Marshfield Food Safety was introduced as an extension of Marshfield Lab'’s veterinary diagnostic services and the National Farm Medicine Center. Collectively, these services give the Clinic’s physicians and scientists the capabilities to impact public health in a profound way through diagnosis of zoonotic diseases (those that can pass between humans and animals); detection of organisms that can transfer from product to human through dietary consumption; and prediction of the affects farm related interactions can have on humans. Food Safety also involves security, which could cause wide spread panic if a contaminant were ever introduced into the food supply from a non-natural force. Marshfield Clinic is the only health facility in the nation, quite possibly the world, which unites all of these entities to protect public health.
