Research and Development Overview
In addition to providing fast and accurate test results and point of access services, Marshfield Food Safety integrates ways to improve food safety specific to customer need through contracted research. Funded by extramural grants, customers and its own research budget, research initiatives focus on reducing or eliminating bacterial pathogens in the food supply.
Research and Education Initiatives
Marshfield Food Safety collaborates with outside agencies to conduct research and training that will ultimately improve food safety and human health.
Studies include:
•Evaluation of rapid, real-time PCR food pathogen analysis methods –working with USDA Agriculture Research Services (ARS) and Meat Animal Research Center (MARC)
•Development of a new diagnostic tool for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in feces –working with industry leaders in the US and abroad in association with the Wisconsin Department of Commerce
•Detection of Johne’s disease –working with academic and industry leaders in association with the Wisconsin Department of Commerce
•Fellowship program offering training and education of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the University of Wisconsin system
•Food microbiology training program working with USDA –Foreign Agricultural Services and leading industry advisors
